CODE CAMP 2018
Sat, Apr 21, 2018 9:30AM - 5:00PM Stanford University |
For our sixth annual Code Camp, we brought together 60 mentors and over 200 high school girls - what a huge success!
As usual, we started the day with breakfast, ice breakers, and a session of programming basics - this really set the foundations for the day. Over lunch, students got to get to know each other more and also ask questions of their mentors (What is it like to live in a dorm? How did you know you wanted to study CS?). Then, we broke out into our special interest tracks, where students got to choose two electives that captured their interest - everything from Music to Cryptography! This year, the Web Design track built website wireframes together before coding them up in HTML and CSS. The girls felt so accomplished transforming their vision into a real working site. To close out this action-packed day, we invited 4 industry women to serve as panelists and give the students a glimpse into a variety of different careers that Computer Science education can lead to. And, of course, can't forget to mention the sweet swag that the students got to take home! |
BRAIN BUSTERS 2018
Sat, Dec 1, 2018 1:00PM - 4:30PM Stanford University |
40 high school girls came to campus for one of our most loved events - Brain Busters! In small teams, the girls rotated through 5 different puzzles, each with a different focus on CS concepts and problem-solving approaches. One of the puzzles that the girls enjoyed the most was "How to train your mentor," where they had to write a program to get their mentor to successfully walk through an obstacle course. They had to work together as a team and walked away with a better sense of what “thinking like a computer scientist” means (with no laptops involved!).
