google company tour 2019
Thu, Jan 17, 2019 3:30PM - 4:30PM Googleplex, Mountain View |
To kick off the new year, we brought 20 high school girls and 4 mentors (Stanford undergraduate women in computer science) to visit the Google Mountain View campus. Google’s mission is “to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful.” Since its founding, Google has made many advancements in the search engine field and is currently the most widely used search engine on the internet. Additionally, Google continues to roll out other technical products in diverse domains that have become integral parts of the lives of its several billion users.
The tour gave high school girls interested in STEM the opportunity to see first-hand what it's like to work at a tech company and interact with women pursuing computer science in college/industry. We had so much fun learning about the company's culture, history, and unique perks. |
CODE CAMP 2019
Sat, Apr 6, 2019 9:00AM - 5:00PM Stanford University |
Massive thank you to the over 200 high school girls and countless mentors who helped make Code Camp 2019 a success! We were inspired by the dedication and passion we witnessed throughout the day, from programming basics in the morning to mentor-led workshops in the afternoon.
For this year's workshops, we were ecstatic to hold some old favorites, such as Artificial Intelligence and Computational Biology, as well as some new tracks, such as Engineering Makerspace and Cybersecurity. |
BITS & BYTES 2019
Sat, Apr 20, 2019 9:00AM - 12:00PM UC Berkeley |
For our first ever Berkeley chapter event, we hosted a workshop at the Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation. 30 girls from all over Northern California learned everything from how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can help maximize PacMan’s utility score to how data visualization can be an impactful medium for visual story telling. They even got to code their first blog from scratch, learning the fundamentals of Web Design in HTML & CSS.
The Berkeley team is grateful to the mentors that helped make this event a success, and looks forward to hosting more events in the future! |
gtc x bridges 2019
Thu, Sep 12, 2019 UC Berkeley |
Our Berkeley chapter hosted 25 students from Rudsdale High School, Rudsdale Newcomer High School, and Sojourner Truth Academy in a collaboration with Bridges, a recruitment and retention organization at UC Berkeley. The students played a sorting game where they worked in teams to sort a deck of cards as an introduction to sorting and computing principles. The activity was followed by Q&A with GTC mentors. We hope to continue working with Bridges and strengthening our relationships with schools in the Oakland community!

bits & Bytes @ michigan
Sat, Nov 2, 2019 University of Michigan Crisler Center |
This month, we kicked off our very first University of Michigan chapter event by hosting a Bits & Bytes Web Design workshop!
We had girls attending from all over the Southeast Michigan Area. They learned everything from basic web design and syntax to even creating and presenting their own webpages from scratch using HTML and CSS. The students were also introduced to different opportunities available to them as a woman in STEM here at the University of Michigan. The Michigan team enjoyed hosting our very first event, and we look forward to hosting more in the future. |
big game big brainteasers @ berkeley
Sun, Nov 17, 2019 UC Berkeley SODA Hall |
Girls Teaching Girls to Code at Berkeley hosted 20 girls from all around Northern California for the chapter's final 2019 event, Big Game Big Brain Teasers.
They presented interactive workshops on boolean and logic, regex, binary, and SQL search to prep for the scavenger hunt. The girls broke up into teams and mentors helped facilitate discussions and answer questions. There were stations around the Berkeley campus with puzzles and riddles that required teamwork, tenacity, and application of the computer science concepts they learned in the workshops. Congratulations to all the teams - we can’t wait to have the winning team back for our next event! |
brainbusters @ stanford
Fri, Dec 6, 2019 Stanford University Huang Engineering Center |
Girls Teaching Girls to Code at Stanford kicked off the school year with our annual Brain Busters event, inviting 40 high school girls from around the Bay Area for an exciting day of interactive puzzles about binary numbers, boolean logic, data corruption, minimum spanning trees, and recursion.
The girls rotated through puzzle stations facilitated by GTC mentors in teams of four, showing great teamwork, mastery of programming concepts, and critical thinking skills! They also had a chance to chat with members of GTC about our journeys as women in STEM and life at Stanford! We loved hosting you all and are excited to bring you more fantastic events throughout the year! |
